Thoughts and Comments from Romans 8

10/12/2021

Kia ora church, I (Guy) thought it would be awesome for us to have a forum where we can share our musings, wonderings, kairos moments, things God is saying to us through Romans 8:18-30 as per the challenge of Tony Hill this week.

Comment below and share what has stood out to you, what you have found tough, joyful, encouraging, or new.

Blessings to you all.

Thanks for the invitation to spend time in Romans 8 this week Tony, and to share Guy.

Monday I shared the passage with my Mt Vic bible study group - a holy trio from Seventh Day Adventists, Arise & All Saints. It was a joy to talk about hope, & helpful to be able to chew over v29 in an "Inclusive Bible" that speaks of being chosen & predestination.

Tuesday I enjoyed The Message translation and v22-25 "That is why waiting does not diminish us, any more than waiting diminishes a pregnant mother... the longer we wait, the larger we become, and the more joyful our expectancy."

I am grateful frequently that the Holy Spirit intercedes for me when I have no words. The world does seem to be going to hell in a handcart & it brings me a peace that surpasses all understanding that my groans, hopes & tears are enough, with Christ.

I did struggle with some of this in the NIV, particularly vs 20. Reading The Message translation was hugely helpful. I especially liked this paraphrase of vs 3-4:

The law always ended up being used as a Band-Aid on sin instead of a deep healing of it. And now what the law code asked for but we couldn’t deliver is accomplished as we, instead of redoubling our own efforts, simply embrace what the Spirit is doing in us.

I found myself being drawn to the groaning of creation even up to the present day really confronting!!! it was as if it was written now! really encouraging to really read over and over that particular verse!

Im encouraged by others who have read different translations. I will go and have a look at others now :) who am I kidding I mean when they kids are asleep ahah.

Such a great challenge.

Thanks Guy, Tony,
I've been reviewing my musings over the week on Romans 8 this morning, and reading it afresh.
This morning I was particularly struck by v26 on the Holy Spirit interceding for us, and God searching our hearts, but knowing the mind of the Spirit.. who intercedes for us. And so how that conversation of the community of God.. is about us & the rest of His creation.
It reminded me of how pained God is when we miss His promptings, or fail to be part of His conversation.
It also reminded me of a Christian friend at work during the week reminding me that I had a purpose (from God) when I complained to him about again being a middleman in a problem (between people) at work. We'd earlier in the week prayed about being agents of God's Kingdom and partnering with Him in His restoration work, & being peacemakers.
Hope is in God and His faithfulness...
